How to Get Kids Eating Healthy Food
Healthy living takes transparency. There can be no mystery in what goes into your food. Unless you’ve got kids willing to starve before they eat greens. In that case, deception is totally fair game.
Here are three suggestions to work amazing foods into your family routine.
1. Puree vegetables
Pureed vegetables can hide in smoothies, pasta sauce, and all kinds of baked goods. When your picky eater devours a cookie not knowing they’re actually consuming carrots, you’ll feel like a super star.
But maybe my favorite ingredients to sneak in is zucchini. Nevermind the fact it’s packed with magnesium, folate, potassium, copper, phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, niacin, protein, vitamins A, B1, B6, B2, and calcium. If you peel it, it won’t turn a smoothie green! Your kiddos may never notice... but their hugely boosted immune systems definitely will.
2. Smoothies, Smoothies, Smoothies
If your kid likes straws and blueberries, you’ll have no trouble sneaking greens into their diet. A smoothie with a blueberry base will stay blue, even with spinach or kale. Those are both incredible health foods, but you might work your way up to kale, since it’s a bit stronger. Even with a smoothie based with lighter colors, you can add nut butter, hemp hearts, and camu camu (this powerful superfood has the highest vitamin C content known to man!).
3. Rebrand health foods
If your kids start to suspect there’s something other than sugar in their juice, it’s time to up your presentation game. My nephew is a peanut butter and jelly only kind of kid, so he wasn’t sure about our Sweet Greens or Kale-Ade. But then we told him it was green apple juice, and it was bottoms up.
Of course hiding healthy food is really a short-term solution. It gets them the nutrients they need, but doesn’t educate them or change their habits. Here are two long-term solutions.
1. Eat healthy
Kids don’t always do what you say, but they mostly do what you do, so lead by example. Develop your own healthy habits. Serve healthy food and make that the only option for dinner. There may be fits, but good habits will form.
2. Bring kids into the kitchen
Every time my nieces and nephews come over, I get them in the kitchen, making stuff with me. Sure it’s a little different from what they’re used to, and they don't always try what we make, but I see them warming up to the idea that food should make you feel amazing.
